Kenyan to win the global OWSD-Elseveir award in Engineering, Technology and Innovation in 2020. Her work has featured in Forbes, Vogue, TEDx, and scientific platforms. Chao is the Founder of KamiLimu, a social enterprise that offers impactful structured mentorship for university students in tech. She also works with Mozilla as the Kenya Lead for the Responsible Computing Challenge, where she supports tech educators to redesign curricula towards ethical AI and responsible innovation.
Before transitioning to industry, Chao worked in academia as a Senior Lecturer of computing at Kenya Methodist University. She holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Cape Town, an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Oxford, and a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science from Kenya Methodist University.
