AI4D-Lab Workshop

10 - 11 Aug, 2022 Dodoma, Tanzania
Embracing AI for Africa's Sustainable Development.

About the Workshop

The AI4D Multidisciplinary Research Lab is a project run in collaboration between two public academic institutions in Tanzania, The University of Dodoma (UDOM) & Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST). We set forth an objective to establish the AI4D lab that fosters capacity development, research, and innovation in responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its application in addressing societal and developmental problems in Africa.

The lab presents a two-day workshop which will take place from 10th-11th August 2022 and will be conducted in hybrid (virtual and physical at the University of Dodoma, Dodoma - Tanzania). The workshop will feature paper presentations, keynote talks, AI solutions demonstrations, and interactive panel discussions. The workshop will explore issues around four themantic areas, namely: Healthcare, Environmental Conservation and Agriculture, Digital Economy and Small-Scale Enterprises, and AI Infrastructure and Data Ecosystem. Researchers, Innovators, Students, and Policymakers from across the continent are encouraged to participate. Participants interested in showcasing their innovative AI solutions and research findings are invited to submit short abstracts describing their works that fall within the aforementioned themantic areas.

About the Venue

The workshop will be physically held at the College of Informatics and Virtual Education, The University of Dodoma (UDOM). UDOM through its well-established colleges provides a unique environment for teaching, learning, research, and public services to ensure a memorable and lifetime experience. UDOM community has been swiftly growing from 1,200 students in 2007 to 28,225 students pursuing over 142 different programs, with an ambition to host 40,000 students at full capacity.

UDOM is situated in the Chimwaga Area about 8 Kilometers from the downtown of Dodoma, Tanzania’s capital city. Dodoma City is located in the center of the country, 455 km west of the former capital, Dar es Salaam; and 441 km south of Arusha City, the cradle of the East African Community. Dodoma features a semi-arid climate with relatively warm temperatures throughout the year. However, the average maximums are consistent throughout the year, average minimums drop to 13°C in July.

Dodoma can be reached via the recently renovated Dodoma Airport and the Central Railway Line connecting it over a distance of 465 km with Dar es Salaam city. There are also major highways connecting Dodoma with Dar es Salaam (via Morogoro Region) to the east, Mwanza City (via Singida) to the west, and Arusha (via Kondoa) to the north.
